Treacherous Slopes of the Rockies

Photo taken by Jessica Foster in Aspen, Colorado 2014.
In the mountains the clouds reach down surrounding the peaks, they hover over the valleys, the blue sky shows through the cracks, while the sun beams down reflecting off ground coated in white blinding snow.  Steep hills lead to somewhere, but from the top, the end is not in sight.  Standing on the edge of the mountain in my waxed skis and uncomfortable thick plastic boots, I think about what this run might be like.  Like my future the mountain’s terrain is unpredictable, vast, and unknown.  Looking at the view from the top of the mountain, about to take the journey down, I can’t see where the steep slope will lead me but in the distance I can see the the chairlift, one of the few checkpoints along the way down.  That’s where I want to go first.  As I ski down, shifting my body weight from left to right carving a wavy line into the path behind me, I have to decide which path I will take--down the easy green triangle or the challenging black diamond.  Both will get me to my destination but my skill level may come out different in the end.  Maybe I could go off onto my own path through the trees, though risky, it could prove to be the best, most exhilarating, adventure.  Much like skiing down a mountain through the powdery snow and giant evergreens, the future is all about decisions and deciding which paths I want to take.  Whether I take the easy way or the hard way will be my decision.  I’ll make my way down past each chairlift until I reach the bottom--my goal.
